This is not blood! It is decomp juice!
“Decomp juice” is what we call the fluid that can leak from a body during decomposition. As tissues begin to break down, cells rupture, and organs start to liquefy. At the same time, bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract spread through the body and produce gases and additional breakdown products. The combination of liquefied tissue, blood, digestive fluids, and bacterial byproducts can eventually seep from the mouth, nose, rectum, or through areas where the skin has begun to break down.
When a body dies in a house, this fluid can seep into the bedding, couch, floors, etc., surrounding the body, which makes it especially challenging to get the dead body smell out, even after the dead body is removed. In enclosed spaces, the combination of decomposition gases and fluids can make the smell especially intense.
The smell is usually described as extremely strong, sweet, rotten, and putrid- or as I like to say pee, poop, rotten fish, and flowers! Much of the odor comes from bacterial decomposition of proteins, which produces chemicals such as putrescine and cadaverine, along with sulfur-containing compounds that can smell like rotten eggs, feces, or decaying meat.
The color can vary quite a bit. Early decomposition fluid may be reddish-brown or dark brown because it contains degraded blood. As decomposition progresses, it can become very dark brown, blackish, green-brown, or sometimes yellow-brown.
Have you ever seen (or smelled) a decomposing body?

Ugh. Awful.
I have. My still born son was left inside me for over a week after death. The warm and watery environment he was in made him smell so bad. When my water broke everyone gagged. When he was born his skin was slipping and he smelled awful. I’m not sure if that the exact same smell, probably not. But I’m sure it’s close!
I’m soooo sorry Jessica you had to endure that! condolences to your baby boy ;(
Thank you. I really appreciate that. 💙
Ohmygoodness Jessica. I’m so very sorry for your tragic loss. God rest his soul 🙏🏼🩵
I’m surprised to hear this because the womb with intact amniotic sack is usually a sterile environment. Was there infection and did it affect your body as well?
I did actually have an infection after. But unsure about before labor and delivery. The water was discolored and all. About 3 days after birth I started having a rapid heart rate, super high fever, headache etc ended up back in the hospital with a bad infection. The Dr lied to me a lot so idk really what all happened or why.
That’s awful!! One week is so long! I am so sorry you had to go through that. My thoughts are with you
Thank you so much 💙
I find dead bodies often. I work at a senior independent living facility. Sometimes when tenants pass we dont know since its independent living and some tenants have no family that check on them. Sometimes its a fairly recent deceased but sometimes its a week or longer. I describe the smell as a sickenly sweet smell. Once you smell it once you wont forget that smell. Ive gotten to the point that I can be walking the hallways in my building and I catch a wiff of it and I know there is someone dead in their apartment.
Wow. I was not aware that it would be the same in the womb. So sorry you had to experience this.
Thank you! 💙
I am so sorry for your loss and having to endure that. I can’t imagine.
It was pretty traumatic. After birth I had an infection and for some reason they thought I had meningitis instead of relating it to the birth. They did a spinal tap in the wrong spot and didn’t lay me flat. I had the worst headache for about a month.
😢my darling 💔my heart has completely shattered for you 😞
❤️❤️❤️
In what country did they put you through that? It’s barbaric and life threatening xxx
I live in the PNW of The US
What a horrible experience. I’m so sorry you were put through that 😩
Worked alongside the LA County Coroner’s Office for a short bit. They get their fair share of decomps. Very unique scent.
I’ve always said “I have no problem seeing gross stuff, but I have a huge problem smelling dead stuff”!!!
I haven’t, but as a former homicide detective, my fiancé has dealt with it plenty of times.
When I was 17, I had a murder suicide in my family, my uncle killed my grandma and then killed himself (My Dad’s mother & brother) and their bodies weren’t found for 3 days and were in an apartment with the thermostat set at 80 so it was very stinky even after the bodies were sent for autopsy. It’s a smell I never want to ever smell again, good thing I’m not in the medical field eh?
Yep when I was 15 I worked in a mortuary for my work experience.
Why would home die with his arms up like this?
rigor mortis
“He”
In have smelled a decomposing body. The guy was found in the water. When he was brought in he was in 2 body bags and placed in a casket loaded with air fresheners. It happened about 20 years ago and that smell has always stuck with me as the absolute worse thing I have ever smelled in my life
Do we know anything about the body in the video? That’s such a weird position…
Must admit…not on my bucket list 😜
As a funeral director I know the smell all too well
Is decomp juice the same as purge fluid?
My aunts neighbor died and wasn’t found for 2 weeks. After the body was removed, no one could enter the apartment until his trust was notified and that took another two weeks. During that time, hundreds of flys started showing up and then maggets started forming in my aunts bathroom. The bacteria from the body leaked from his bathroom to her bathroom and continued up the wall to the top floor of both units. They had to go stay in an air bnb while the demolition of the units was replaced. She said he was a smell she would never ever want to smell again nor forget. She said the crazy thing was her dogs were barking like crazy for the entire week before the body was found. Sorry for my grammar
