A 64-year-old man arrived at the hospital with repeated seizures and confusion. Years earlier, he had undergone surgery to remove bleeding around his brain. Now, a wound at the old surgical site had reopened, and something inside was moving!!!
Doctors found an opening in his scalp and skull with exposed brain tissue and a cluster of wriggling MAGGOTS.
This extremely rare condition is called cerebral myiasis. His poorly healing, foul-smelling wounds were an open invitation for flies. The flies laid eggs, one thing led to another, and boom. Maggots.
Surgeons removed approximately 25–30 maggots with forceps and cleared away infected bone.
He received intravenous antibiotics and daily wound care. Remarkably, his alertness improved, and his seizures stopped before discharge, with skull reconstruction planned for a later visit.
Do you know anyone, or have you treated anyone, with a maggot infestation?

Wow! 😵💫
🤮
Talk about a headache…oof.
Not human. I work in a veterinary hospital, and I see lots of animals (mostly cats) with maggots. One case in particular was an outdoor cat that came in not doing well. He was very dehydrated and recumbent. When I went to take a temp and he was full of maggots!! The worse part was that they had eaten away at his penis! We did an ultrasound and the maggots went all the way to his bladder!! You could see them wiggling in his bladder!! He did not survive.
Same here. I see many animal patients with maggot infestations
Especially rabbits! If you’re really quiet you can hear them nibbling… they sound like Rice Krispies or as a friend said “disco rice”
Is that a huge maggot at the end ?
I’ve treated a few hospice patients who came in with maggot infested wounds. It’s really sad when dying people are too weak to care for themselves and they have no one to help them.
That sounds really hard to see. I couldn’t work as a human nurse.
